Is this mid-tier upscale Secrets resort worth it for couples, groups, and destination weddings?
I just wrapped up a quick 3-night stay in a Preferred Club Oceanfront Swim-Out Junior Suite at Secrets Playa Esmeralda and wanted to get this review out while its all still fresh in my mind. Secrets Playa Esmeralda is a relatively new adutls only all-inclusive resort located along the unspoiled coastline of Playa Esmeralda in the Miches region of the Dominican Republic about 60 miles from the Punta Cana airport. The resort is attached to Dreams Playa Esmeralda, the brand's family friendly sister resort. More on that later.
My overall rating?
⭐ 8.5/10
Secrets Playa Esmeralda is an upper mid-tier to premium all-incusive adults only resort that fits nicely into the Hyatt Inclusive Collection portfolio. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful new Secrets resorts in the brand. The decor is a mix of soft contemporary Caribbean luxury with earthy, coastal-modern textures. It feels less “resort-y” and more luxury boutique coastal retreat. The resort offers a beautiful beach, easy layout, lively energy, and strong value for the price point.
🌊 Beach Review: One of the Best in the Caribbean
If you are beach lovers, this is where Secrets Playa Esmeralda really shines.
⭐ Beach Rating: 10/10
The beach honestly does not even photograph as well as it looks in person.
Very low risk for sargassum issues
Miles of walkable beach
Turtle nesting beach = natural, protected feel
Clear blue water
No pesky vendors or public foot traffic
While the waves directly in front of the Dreams side and part of Secrets can be rough, there are calmer swimmable sections just a short walk down the beach. This is honestly one of the strongest selling points for this resort.
🛏️ Rooms at Secrets Playa Esmeralda
The rooms are comfortable, clean, and designed in a boho-chic style that feels fresh without trying too hard. Entry level rooms start at a very generous 592 sq ft and all rooms provide an airy, upscale modern coastal minimalist vibe featuring soft neutrals,
warm woods, and rattan accents. Because the buildings are arranged in a horseshoe shape facing the ocean, most rooms get at least a partial ocean view, but the oceanfront categories are absolutely worth it for the view alone.
Preferred Club Swim-Out Review
The swim-out was a fun experience, although due to a cold front during the first part of our stay, the water was too cold to really enjoy it for more than a few hours.
I’d recommend this room type as ✅ great from May through September, but ⚠️ less ideal in cooler months. I'd skip it and go for the higher more expansive ocean view then.
Preferred Club balconies also include a jacuzzi tub, while the Master Suites add an outdoor dining table as well.
The top room is the Preferred Club Presidential Suite Ocean Front, coming in around 1,840 sq ft. There is only one of these, so you must snag it early!

top-tier Preferred amenities
🏝️ Resort Layout + Who This Is Best For
One of the things I really liked is the size and layout of Secrets Playa Esmeralda.
It’s easy to navigate and doesn’t feel overwhelmingly large, but also not so small that you have seen and done everything in a day.
The property is split into four clear sections:

Secrets Preferred
Dreams Preferred
Dreams Standard
This makes Secrets ideal for not just for couples and adult friend groups, but also:
Multi-generational groups
Destination weddings
Corporate events
Groups wanting both adults-only and family options
The dual-resort setup makes it incredibly versatile.
🎉 Vibe + Crowd: Younger, More Social Energy
Compared to many Secrets properties, this one definitely skewed a bit younger and more social.
If you are familiar with the Brand, think:
younger than Cap Cana
younger than Akumal
more social than Maroma
It’s not a party resort in the MTV Spring Break sense, but it has a noticeably more energetic atmosphere than many other Secrets resorts.
That makes it perfect for clients who want:✔️ adults-only luxury✔️ social energy✔️ fun nightlife without chaos.
Secrets Playa Esmeralda attracts style-conscious couples, honeymooners, social luxury travelers, and group clients who want a beautiful beach and a more exclusive feel than the busy Punta Cana corridor at a premium but not ultra-luxury resort and price point.
🍽️ Honest Food Review
This was the main area where I deducted points.
The reality is: The Dominican Republic is not known for exceptional all-inclusive food, and I always set expectations around that.
The food at Secrets Playa Esmeralda ranged from:
decent
occasionally very good
occasionally forgettable
Nothing was truly standout; however, we did not have an opportunity to dine at Bordeaux which I heard was absolutely wonderful from many other guests.
My advisor take:
I would absolutely still recommend this resort unless you are a serious foodie. If you are okay with typical chain restaurants at home when dining out, you'll be fine here.
For most travelers, the food is good enough. For luxury food-driven guests, I’d steer you elsewhere or prepare expectations.

Strong, well-made cocktails 🍹
Premium liquor access on Preferred side
Beautiful outdoor hydrotherapy spa area
Evening piano bar with live music 🎹

Pool games and social daytime vibe
This gives the resort a nice balance between relaxation and energy.
🚐 Important Travel Logistics from Punta Cana Airport
This is the biggest booking consideration. Secrets Playa Esmeralda is about 1.5 hours from Punta Cana Airport (PUJ).
That means:
Private transfers are highly recommended
Shared transfers can be painfully long
Arrival and departure flight times matter A LOT
For shorter stays, I would strongly advise:✈️ earliest flight in✈️ latest flight out
Otherwise, you'll lose a big part of your trip to transfer time.
💍 Final Verdict: Should You Book Secrets Playa Esmeralda?
For most all-inclusive travelers, absolutely!
This is a beautiful premium adults-only resort in Punta Cana that works especially well for:
couples
weddings
anniversaries
birthday celebrations
social groups
beach lovers
clients wanting strong value
groups mixing Dreams + Secrets guests
The beach alone makes it worth serious consideration.
Would I send a high-end foodie, ultra-luxury seeking guest here? Probably not.
Would I recommend it for everyone else? 100% yes.
Most of the guests I met absolutely loved their stay—and I can easily see why.
