Why I Almost Regretted My River Cruise and Then Booked Another One

I was sure river cruising would be perfect for me. I love international travel. I love ocean cruising. It felt like an obvious fit. By the end of day two, I was convinced I’d made a mistake. By day three, everything drastically changed. By the end of the trip, I put a deposit down on another cruise knowing I needed more experiences like this.

The Part I Didn’t Expect

I’m used to traveling a certain way; slow, immersive, and independent. I like spending multiple days in one place, wandering without much of a plan, choosing my own pace, and diving deep into the local culture. River cruising isn’t that. It’s structured. It’s intentional. It is slower in a completely different way from other trips that I have taken.

You unpack once and settle in. Mornings are spent gliding past vineyards, castles, and tiny towns you didn’t even know existed. In the afternoons, you’re stepping off the ship into a new destination, usually with a guided excursion waiting.

At first, the structure felt restrictive. I wasn’t used to moving along someone else’s timeline. I wasn’t used to seeing a place for just a few hours and then leaving. It felt…rushed and limiting.

The Shift

On day three, something clicked. Instead of resisting the structure, I leaned into it. And that’s when I realized that river cruising isn’t about depth in one place. It’s about curation. Every day is intentionally designed. Every stop is a highlight. Every experience is chosen for you, but still customizable enough to feel personal. Once I stopped comparing it to how I usually travel, I started appreciating it for what it actually is.

A Different Kind of Experience

The excursions quickly became one of my favorite parts. One day I was biking through the windmill-filled countryside. Next, I was wandering around storybook villages. Then came castle tours, gardens, city walks, and food experiences.

No two days felt the same and I didn’t have to plan any of it! That was the magic. It wasn’t about checking boxes. It was about being present and letting the experience unfold. Even the rhythm of the ship became something I grew to love. Especially the evenings with most nights ending the same way. The ship would gather for drinks, share stories from the day, and settle into a long, unhurried dinner that felt like an experience in itself rather than just a meal.

The Unexpected Community

One of the biggest surprises was the people. The ships are small with around 160 passengers. You naturally start recognizing familiar faces. You pass the same people at breakfast, on excursions, and again at dinner.

Conversations start easily. Over time, those small interactions turn into something more.It reminded me of walking the Camino de Santiago years ago. How seeing the same people day after day slowly builds a sense of community. By the end of the cruise, these weren’t just fellow travelers. They were people I had shared experiences with; meals, stories, laughter.

The kind of connections that last beyond the trip.

Why I’d Choose A River Cruise Again

I spent 10 days sailing with AmaWaterways through the Netherlands and Belgium, and the experience on this cruise line played a huge role in changing my perspective. The service felt genuinely personal. Not forced or scripted. It was thoughtful.

By the end of the trip, the staff remembered the smallest details: what I liked to drink, what I ordered, even my daily routines. I rarely had to ask for anything twice.

One of the standout moments was the Chef’s Table. This is an intimate, multi-course dining experience included with the cruise. It was my favorite meal of the entire trip. The food, the wine pairings, the atmosphere all felt elevated and yet relaxed and fun. The small crew working Chef’s Table played a large part in why this experience felt so perfect.

Final Thoughts

River cruising didn’t replace the way I love to travel, it expanded it. It taught me to appreciate a different pace and a different structure. It’s a different way of experiencing the world. Not deeper in one place, but broader, more varied, and just as meaningful.

Sometimes, all it takes is three days to completely change your mind.
